This year’s 46th running of the Red Parka Challenge Cup back in March was the biggest fundraising total the race has had to date. The dual giant slalom race held at Attitash Mountain Resort had 106 racers compete this year, raising $21,000 for the Eastern Slope Ski Club Junior Program.
“Our efforts keep going up, with this year’s fundraising total exceeding last year’s record year of $15,245,” said Laura Lemieux, the newly appointed committee chairperson for the Red Parka Pub Challenge Cup. “Racers are doing a great job at doing fundraising on their own, something we started for the 2018 race year.”
Racer registration fees all go toward ESSC and racers can also fundraise upon registering using PledgeReg, which ties into the online race registration. Those efforts along with the infamous $20 “full wing span” raffle held at the Bib Draw and Awards Ceremony, helped make the committee’s fundraising goal of $20,000.
“ESSC is so grateful for the Red Parka Race and all of its support for our cause,” said Stefan Karnopp, both Challenge Cup committee member and board member for ESSC. “These funds go directly to assisting the 600-plus elementary-aged students that participate annually in the Junior Program.”
At the conclusion of this year’s race, Terry O’Brien, owner of the Red Parka Pub and long-time chairperson of the race committee, announced she was stepping down from the race. The committee elected Lemieux at the committee’s wrap-up meeting to take over for the 2020 race. Lemieux, Director of Marketing for Settlers Green, has been a committee member since 2013.
Next year’s race is scheduled for March 20, 2020 at Attitash Mountain Resort.
