This year’s 46th running of the Red Parka Challenge Cup back in March was the biggest fundraising total the race has had to date. The dual giant slalom race held at Attitash Mountain Resort had 106 racers compete this year, raising $21,000 for the Eastern Slope Ski Club Junior Program.
“Our efforts keep going up, with this year’s fundraising total exceeding last year’s record year of $15,245,” said Laura Lemieux, the newly appointed committee chairperson for the Red Parka Pub Challenge Cup. “Racers are doing a great job at doing fundraising on their own, something we started for the 2018 race year.”
Racer registration fees all go toward ESSC and racers can also fundraise upon registering using PledgeReg, which ties into the online race registration. Those efforts along with the infamous $20 “full wing span” raffle held at the Bib Draw and Awards Ceremony, helped make the committee’s fundraising goal of $20,000.
“ESSC is so grateful for the Red Parka Race and all of its support for our cause,” said Stefan Karnopp, both Challenge Cup committee member and board member for ESSC. “These funds go directly to assisting the 600-plus elementary-aged students that participate annually in the Junior Program.”
At the conclusion of this year’s race, Terry O’Brien, owner of the Red Parka Pub and long-time chairperson of the race committee, announced she was stepping down from the race. The committee elected Lemieux at the committee’s wrap-up meeting to take over for the 2020 race. Lemieux, Director of Marketing for Settlers Green, has been a committee member since 2013.
Next year’s race is scheduled for March 20, 2020 at Attitash Mountain Resort.
The Red Parka Pub Challenge Cup Committee is setting a tone this year for the running of the 45th Annual Challenge Cup Race, taking place on March 16, 2018. The committee is looking to shatter its fundraising goal of $10,000 and “bump it up” to $15,000 this year. The race, which is held at Attitash Mountain Resort, is the second largest fundraising event for the Eastern Slope Ski Club, a nonprofit that provides ski equipment and helps in ski development programs in the Mt. Washington Valley.
The committee plans to reach its goal through new fundraising strategies including a PledgeReg, where racers can raise additional funds beyond the racing fee to compete for prizes. The race fee is $65 in advance and registration takes place online at skireg.com. Racers can opt-in for the PledgeReg and those that raise $300 or more will have their race fee waived. Individuals or teams are both eligible to compete for separate grand prizes for raising the most money.
Keeping with its theme, “Bump It Up” will be the race slogan this year and the committee is working on new race swag for spectators and racers to purchase during the event. Proceeds from merchandise sales would go to the cause.
In addition, the Bib Draw Night which takes place on Thursday, March 15 at 6 p.m. is open to the public and includes a ton of raffles. All pub patrons are eligible to enter the raffle.
“We want to make it accessible for everyone to experience the fun of the Red Parka Race, and a lot of that happens off the hill,” said Terry O’Brien owner of the Red Parka Pub and Event Director. “So, even if you can’t race this year, you can stop by the pub on the night before The Cup and contribute to the cause!”
The Red Parka Pub Challenge Cup Race is a 21+ race. Raise it up! That’s what the Red Parka Pub Challenge Cup Committee is calling for this year as the 43rd annual running of this dual, pro-style GS race approaches. The Committee met on Monday, February 22, and unanimously decided it’s time for the ladies to raise the hardware, too. Starting at this year’s race, the outright winner of the Men’s Division and Women’s Division will hoist a silver Paul Revere cup at the awards ceremony.
Additionally, three female racers will be inducted into the Challenge Cup Hall-of-Fame, which is on display at the Red Parka Pub in Downtown Glen. The induction will take place on Thursday, March 17, during the Bib Draw on the eve of Race Day.
Sticking to the theme, this year’s race is on track to raising more money than any other year with the help of two additional major sponsors for the 2016 race including nearby Story Land as well as Locust Street Dental Center, based out of Dover, New Hampshire. The two join the extensive list of sponsors for the 43rd annual dual GS race taking place at Attitash Mountain Resort on Friday, March 18. Additional major sponsors include Attitash Mountain Resort, Budweiser, Crest Auto World, Hurricane Racing, Marblehead Graphics, P1 Timing, Pepsi, Settlers Green Outlet Village, SkiChair.com, Southern Wine & Spirits of New England, Sport Thoma and Valley Originals.
“With their support, we hope to break a fundraising goal of $10,000 during this year’s race,” said Terry O’Brien, Race Director and Owner of the Red Parka Pub. “All proceeds from the race go to the Eastern Slope Ski Club, which supports youth ski development programs in the Mt. Washington Valley.”

Considered the premier New England Amateur ski race, the RPPCC attracts some of the best racers in the region. All proceeds from the race benefit the Eastern Slopes Ski Club, a local organization that funds youth skiing in the Mt. Washington Valley in New Hampshire.
